How the estimate is worked out

  1. Paintable surface. Room perimeter times wall height, less 20 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window, plus the floor area if the ceiling is included.
  2. Paint. Surface times coats, divided by the coverage on the can, rounded up to whole gallons and priced at your cost per gallon.
  3. Labor. Surface times coats, divided by your crew's production rate, times your hourly labor cost.
  4. Price. Paint, supplies and labor are your cost; your markup on cost is added on top. The per-square-foot figure is that price divided by the paintable surface.
