Interior house painting cost calculator

Price the inside of a whole house at once from how many rooms it has, their average size and wall height, whether the ceilings are painted, your paint cost, prep time, how fast your crew works and the markup you need. Every number below is a starting assumption: replace it with yours and the price updates as you type.

The rooms and your numbers

Doors count as 20 sq ft and windows as 15 sq ft of wall you will not paint. Trim, baseboards and door faces are not measured: cover them with prep hours or markup. Set ceiling coats to 0 to leave the ceilings out.

How the estimate is worked out

  1. Walls. Each room's perimeter, twice its average length plus width, times the wall height, times the number of rooms, less 20 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window.
  2. Ceilings. Each room's average length times width, times the number of rooms. With 0 ceiling coats the ceilings are left out.
  3. Paint. Wall area times wall coats, and ceiling area times ceiling coats, each divided by the coverage on the can, rounded up to whole gallons and priced at your cost per gallon for that paint.
  4. Labor. Your prep hours, plus everything painted times its coats divided by your crew's production rate, times your hourly labor cost.
  5. Price. Wall paint, ceiling paint, supplies and labor, each rounded to whole dollars, are your cost; your markup on that cost, also in whole dollars, is added on top, so the lines always add up to the price. The per-square-foot figure is that price divided by the floor area of the rooms.
